GUMASA, SARANGANI –  Amid preparations for his upcoming bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao imparted words of encouragement addressed to a gathering of farmers in his province.

In a message during the recent Mango Congress in Gumasa, the boxing hero encouraged farmers to “heighten commitment to increase the competitiveness of the Philippine mango in the world market and develop more production areas in Mindanao.”

Pacquiao added in his message, delivered by a representative, that the region should utilize the partnerships among mango growers to “learn as much to ensure the strongest position in the world market”.

Held at the Isla Jardin del Mar Resort,  the event was attended by executives of the mango industry in the region. Discussions centered on issues such as climate change in provinces that have traditionally dominated the mango production sector in the Philippines.

Virginia de la Fuente, Philippine Mango Industry Foundation president, said  Mindanao only produces 35 percent of the total national production of mango, an estimated 1 million metric tons annually as of 2003 or P12.5 billion per year.

About 65 percent of all mango production comes from Luzon, primarily Pangasinan.

De la Fuente urged mango growers, contract sprayers, financiers, input suppliers, nursery operators, traders, processors and logistics providers to work together in all activities to improve the mango industry not just in Mindanao but nationwide.

She also appealed to the Department of Agriculture to assist the region’s mango industry through consultations and prioritization of activities. She also asked for grants and financial assistance that would further improve mango production.
