VIGAN, ILOCOS SUR – A total of P3.1 billion from the 2012 budget of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be allocated for the improvement of access roads to major tourist destinations in the country.

Department of Tourism (DoT) officials met recently with counterparts from the DPWH to urge the latter to increase fund allocation for tourism development. The DoT also identified several heritage destinations for improvement.

Topping the list of DoT is the development of the St. Paul Subterranean River in Puerto Princesa, a finalist in the search for the New 7 Wonders of the World. Access to the area has been markedly improved with paved roads already available. But there is still a lot to be done in terms of encouraging tourists to other Palawan destinations

Tourism Undersecretary Daniel Corpuz also noted the Walled City of Intramuros, a key cultural attraction in Manila. Intramuros has cobblestone streets that date back to the Spanish era and connects to different landmarks including the magnificent San Agustin Church, Manila Cathedral, Palacio Del Gobernador, Bahay Tsinoy, among others.

“There are plans of inviting investors to renovate the existing walls and upgrade the old parts in the Old Wall City,” Corpuz said.

There is also a need to empower local communities residing near the Banaue Rice Terraces. Traveling to Ifugao can be done through long, winding mountain roads.

“We have to improve access to the Ifugao region,” said Corpuz, adding this would encourage tourism and provide more jobs for locals.

Also needing government support is Vigan known for its cultural heritage as depicted in the old Burgos Museum. Vigan is also a favorite destination of Taiwanese tourists who enter the country through the north via Laoag International Airport in Ilocos Norte.

The DoT said it has also received commitment from the Department of Transportation and Communication (DoTC) for the improvement of airport terminals, particularly the old Terminal 1 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
