QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA — President Benigno Aquino III met with executives of tech  company IBM in New York City and expressed his administration’s commitment to supporting and improving economic development through technology innovation.

The meetings were held as part of IBM’s “THINK: A Forum on the Future of Leadership”, which convenes international leaders from government, business, science and education over two days.

The forum aims to “to explore the deep, structural changes confronting the world’s systems, implications for the leadership of organizations and societies, and how information and technology are reshaping the modern world,” according to IBM in a statement.

IBM has been an active member of the business community in the Philippines since it began local operations in 1937.

The meetings between President Aquino and IBM reinforced the Philippine government’s focus on using technology to improve the economy and also government services.

During the meeting, President Aquino discussed IBM “Smarter Planet” initiatives with IBM executives, led by Growth Markets General Manager Bruno Di Leo.

Smarter Planet initiatives support government transformation to promote transparency and strengthen governance, as well as collaborative talent and skills development initiatives to empower Filipinos to harness new technologies and skills.

“The Philippines is rapidly becoming a major centre for employment and skills growth, business development and investment for IBM, “ said Di Leo. “We are proud of our investment and partnership with industry and the government to use technology to improve citizen services and support economic development.”

In the Philippines, IBM has been actively pushing its Smart City campaign, which revolves around government administrations having to manage their cities with technologies that increases efficiency and delivery of service.

In IBM’s idealized smart city, key government services are all capable of responding quickly to the needs of the citizens. For instance, the city-wide security systems such as security videos can detect dangerous situations and respond to law enforcement.

Locally, IBM initially started this campaign in Cebu City, establishing partnerships with academic and local government institutions. After Cebu, IBM is also taking its Smarter Planet program to Davao City, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod and General Santos.

“The ideological paradigms of political leadership common in the last century cannot account for the complexities in today’s societies, and governments need to be nimble and adaptable enough in order to respond to challenges as they arise,” said President Aquino.

“The challenge is to approach different situations with a certain pragmatic idealism,” he added.

IBM has also been working closely with the Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPAP) on the development of human resources for the IT-BPO industry.

Last December 2010, President Aquino inaugurated three new IBM facilities located at the UP Ayala Technohub, Quezon City, for Business Process Delivery of Human Resources, Finance & Administration, Customer Relations Management and Application Management Services operations.

In 2011, IBM expanded its operations in a fourth facility in the Ayala Technohub.
