MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA— Davao is the first location in the country to have a customized SIM and Infoboard to promote local tourism.

The Infoboard from Smart Communications is a web-based messaging solution that offers functionalities designed to address the needs of the Department of Tourism (DoT).

Through the Infoboard, the DoT will have the capability to broadcast advisories to its various stakeholders, including tourists. The project is part of the “Pilipinas, Tara Na!” advocacy program for domestic tourism.

Davao is a prime business, investment and tourism hub for Mindanao and Southern Philippines, in general.

The Infoboard provides instant access to destinations and promote special events, festivals, conferences exhibits and related tourism activities, said Art Boncato, DoT regional director for Davao.

“The National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP), that DoT finished for presentation to President Aquino, focuses on bringing development to the regions like positioning airports to accept direct flights as afforded by the open skies policy of the president,” Boncato said.

According to Boncato, Davao is at the threshold of great tourism growth with increasing domestic and international flights, new hotels, new islands to highland products in Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley and Davao City.

The technology is aimed to enable more tourists to repeat visits in Davao and other parts of the country by offering them ease of information.
