QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— Candy Reyes had a simple vision when she started Pedala Bike Messengers – provide a same-day delivery service and promote bicycle culture among Filipinos.
A cyclist herself, Candy put up Pedala Bike Messenger in 2008, realizing that most (if not all) courier services available are use motorized vehicles that contributes to the pollution in Metro Manila.
“It all started during the peak of oil price hikes… we’re slowly being introduced to take part in preventing climate change. Using the bicycle is a good way to avoid traffic and pollution and so I thought, it was one good way to promote it,” she says.
Candy says her “bike messengers” are just as efficient in handling same-day pick-ups and deliveries. Moreso, they share the same advocacy of helping save the environment.
Her business currently offer services in Metro Manila from Quezon City to San Juan, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Makati, The Fort, Manila and Pasay (not crossing the North Luzon and South Luzon Expressways) .
For pick-up and delivery service within a city (within Makati, for example), the fee is 70 pesos for a kilo (or less), with an additional 50 pesos per additional kilo.
If the customer wants to send a parcel and wants the messenger to wait for the receiver to send something back to the sender, the fee is 120 pesos. Deliveries that cross from one city to another costs 100 pesos for one way and 150 pesos for a roundtrip delivery.
“People are actually glad that even if we are small company, we have given them an alternative service that won’t harm the environment,” says Candy.
She is hoping more Filipinos would realize that it is possible to use the bicycle as a means of transportation and that many are already doing it.
“Some want to start biking when bike lanes become available but we are doing it the other way around, in the hope that the government will soon work on providing infrastructure because many (Filipinos) are already doing it.”
Candy is aware of the proposed bills filed in Congress and Senate that promote biking. She is hoping that more commercial establishments will provide parking spaces that benefits bike owners.
“I also hope that more Filipinos would realize that biking is a legitimate way of transportation and that it is much cheaper and practical instead of wasting money on fuel and adding to the traffic congestion.
