BATAC CITY, ILOCOS NORTE— Mango growers in Batac received a substantial livelihood grant from the government.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) said some 258 members of the Association of Mango Growers (AMG) in Batac City received the grant amounting to P450,000.

The DoLE said the livelihood grant will be used to purchase equipment and tools to transform mango production in Barangay Maipalig and Barangay Quiom in the province into a sustainable business enterprise.

The agency also expects member farmers of the AMG to use the grant to produce mango-based products such as puree, nectar jam, chutney, and dried mango candies.

Batac City has been known in mango production for years now and with post-production processing of more food products with longer shelf life, the community could earn in greater income, the DoLE said.

The city was also one of the identified areas in the Ilocos region for assistance under the DOLE integrated livelihood program.

The DoLE further said it has partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for technical assistance in packaging and marketing AMG’s mango products.
