QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA–Bus drivers will soon be required to get re-training and certification from the Technical Education and Skills Authority (TESDA) to solve the increasing number of vehicular accidents involving public utility vehicles.
TESDA together with the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) met to come up with stiffer measures to further avert accidents. Both agencies have agreed to initially accredit public utility drivers plying the major routes of Metro Manila.\
The agency will conduct a “trainer’s training course” and those who will receive this training in turn would re-train drivers on road rules and regulations and basic courtesy.
TESDA Director-General Joel Villanueva said that there are 55,000 public utility drivers and 15,000 of them ply the EDSA route. “If we try to accredit all of them by 2013, we will not be able to do it,” he said.
Earlier, two batches of lady drivers were granted certification and are now employed by major bus lines. These drivers are also exempted in the number coding scheme in Metro Manila.
