QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – SM North EDSA is hosting the National Bonsai Exhibition and Competition, which is presented by the Philippine Bonsai Society, Inc. (PBSI).

At least 40 bonsais were exhibited at the Sky Garden of SM North EDSA, which were also judged by Professor Amy Liang, one of the premier experts in bonsai nursing. The exhibit started last May 6 and will end by May 31.

Bonsais are traditionally an artistic form of horticulture from Japan. The concept is to create miniature trees in trays or pots using aesthetic techniques that highlight the tree or shrub’s beauty. Usually, the trees used for bonsai are ficus, kalyos, Orange Jasmin, bantigue, lantana, tamarind, camagong, and camachile.

Cultivating bonsais require patients and dedication. As the tree grows, the horticulturist has to manage and control its growth by trimming, pruning, and wiring the branches. The horticulturist will be able to create aesthetic  designs, sometimes virtually making the small trees take on a different life on their own.

The PBSI is among the first groups to organize and promote bonsai nurturing in the Philippines. They have been promoting bonsai as a hobby and as a professional activity since the 1970s. So far, they have held exhibits and competitions across the country.

The SM North EDSA exhibit is one of their biggest as many of the bonsai trees are presented to patrons of the mall.

The event aims to promote appreciation of bonsais in the Philippines. However, the bigger aspect is to make bonsais a living testament to how beauty can be created out of something so small.
