MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – Divisoria, or popularly referred to as “DV”, remains the undisputed shopping destination for bargain hunters.
Sidewalk vendors, bargain items, merchants, low-rise commercial buildings, and numerous jeepneys along busy streets are a common sight in Divisoria. Which is why many think that Divisoria is a rowdy and unsafe place to be in.
Divisoria is actually a remnant of Spanish colonization in the 1500s. According to some accounts, Divisoria was established as a result of a padrino, system which was strongly enforced by Spaniards to Chinese traders.
These Chinese merchants were shooed away from Intramuros, which was then a center of trade to the small community of Binondo. The displaced traders soon established more shops that now extend to the present location of Divisoria.
Personally, I feel more at ease when inside a controlled shopping area.
Major malls like Tutuban Shopping Mall, Divisoria Mall, 168 Shopping Mall and Meisic Mall are the refuge to like-minded shoppers. Good thing that these malls are all within the vicinity of Divisoria.
The Tutuban Shopping Mall serves as host to more established stores in Metro Manila. Mark Maranga of Philippines Travel Guide considers it the best place to for buy-one-take-one deals. He also wrote that gadgets here are relatively cheaper than the ones sold in bigger malls.
The Divisoria Mall is partitioned by rows called pasilios and is the most ideal place to shop for knick-knacks, gift items, souvenirs, toys, and house ware. The assortment of items this mall offers makes it a favorite of wholesalers catering to merchants who want to spend less by buying in bulk.
The 168 Mall is considered by Back Packing Philippines as the “ladies mall” for the assortment of fashion and health and wellness items you can find here.
Meisic Mall is the place for you if you’re a techie. You can buy hardware and software that can be bought for bargain price.
Regardless of the time of the year, shopping in these malls can still be very physically staining. Let these survival tips from Finance Manila help you through your future mall-hopping escapade.
These directions by Going Anywhere in Metro Manila should give you a smooth and safe trip to your destination in this jungle of a marketplace.
For the more adventurous shoppers, there are many outdoor markets situated in sub-streets Juan Luna, Ylaya, Tabora, Santo Cristo and Soler. Stalls in
Tabora offer textile needs, costumes wardrobes and corporate giveaways also sold at bargain prices.
From experience, I’ve learned that Divisoria is packed with hagglers especially at night when vendors seem easiest to negotiate with.
Rumor has it that prices in Divisoria are no longer as cheap as before. But the fact remains that your P200 can still go a long way if you spend it at Divisoria and great deals await the patient and wise shopper.
