QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – The Philippine Orchid Society aims to spread awareness on the benefits of raising flowers and ornamental plants.

The group held its month-long annual orchid show at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

The show includes the best orchid blooms of the season set in landscaped exhibits executed by the country’s top orchid collectors and landscapers.

Jenny Rivera, the group’s secretary, says it is important that Filipinos appreciate and recognize the benefits of orchid conservation.

“We should also be proud that we are topping orchid competitions abroad even if we are not subsidized by the government,” says Rivera.

She points out that joining international competitions is expensive yet most Filipino still manage to impress other countries.

The group was invited to exhibits in Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and other foreign countries.

For those living in the city who want to start growing orchids, Jenny suggests picking a variety that can grow in urban environments such as dendrobiums.

“A dendrobium takes three months before it reaches its flowering size. When it blooms it can last for three weeks even if you cut it,” she says.
