MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – These young entrepreneurs are doing their part in promoting patriotism through their unique business of selling novelty soaps.
Rina Madelar and Katrina Lubaton started Sabon ni Juan as a school project and saw an opportunity to earn from the business. “More than earning, we have made it into something a lot worthwhile,” says Rina.
Rina and Katrina, who both majored in Chemistry in college, thought of incorporating a concept for their business project that was socially relevant.
“We brainstormed and agreed on a very odd but fresh concept of handmade soap bars that would bear our love for our country,” says Katrina who says their Pinoy soaps have multiple functions.
Eventually, they carried on with the business after college when they saw the positive acceptance of their products.
The soaps double as home décors or air fresheners and are made from natural compounds, Rina and Katrina say.
“We fear that because it’s also novelty, then it will be perceived as just that and not really effective skin care products,” says Rina.
To add a more local touch, the two also gave interesting names to the soap products. There’s the “Soapin-Soapin,” resembling the sapin-sapin, the “Pagong Ligo” the soap that is shaped like the pawikan or turtle, the “Jeepney Joyride,” or miniature soaps resembling jeepneys, the “Soap of the Sun” soaps that bear the colors of the Philippine flag, and the simple “I love Ph” soaps.
The products have definitely been grabbing attention from young consumers especially in bazaars. “This is a new way of getting the attention of people toward the direction of loving yourself and loving your country,” says Rina.
At 60 to 100 pesos each, the soaps are also great as corporate giveaways.
Rina and Katrina advise young entrepreneurs to use fresh ideas to come up with a business that has great value. “If you have an idea, no matter how crazy it may seem, as long as you’re happy about it, go for it.”
