QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – The Manila Seedling Bank Foundation at the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue is perhaps one of the best kept secrets of Quezon City.

It is one of the few places in the whole of Metro Manila that gives visitors an opportunity to see unique flora while enjoying a relaxing stroll along several of the botanical nurseries called “garden centers.”

Each of these garden centers house different categories of plants, including rare and exotic types such as the King Louis Gardens. Major attractions also include orchid gardens, where the Philippine Horticulture Society holds its annual exhibit, as well as a bonsai garden.

Professional and hobby gardeners can buy virtually any type of seeds and gardening implements at the Manila Seedling Bank’s The Flower Mart. Some horticulture services that are also holding office at the Manila Seedling Bank also provide a variety of services, from flower arrangement to landscaping services.

The Manila Seedling Bank could even be mistaken for a park because of the wide variety of colorful plants. While most people think of it as source for ornamental plants, it is actually a research office for the Philippines’ botany industry as well as a storage facility for endemic plants in the Philippines.

In the last 30 years since its inception, the Manila Seedling Bank has been one of the sources of the seeds used by the Philippine government for conservation and natural resource development programs. Its efforts have helped reforest 13,400 hectares of land in Luzon.

It was also here where Filipino botanists and environment conservation experts developed several planting techniques. One of these is the “nurse-climax tree” technique wherein the seeds of fruit trees are planted alongside seeds of fast growing legume plants. The legume plants serve as shade and to increase the health of the soil as the fruit trees grow.

Other technologies developed are the use of plant by-product as compost for new trees; organic charcoal production; and biomass development. Manila Seedling also provides consultancy and plant maintenance services for public and private customers.

The Manila Seedling Bank Foundation Incorporated is located at the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue. They can be contacted at telephone number +63 2 9247001 to 2. They can also be emailed at qualitytrees@msbfi.com
