QUEZON CITY,  METRO MANILA – For four years now, Sandy Allan-Beltran has been organizing bazaars benefiting micro-entrepreneurs such as the Cubao X Holiday Bazaar, which aims to showcase locally made products.

“What sets this bazaar apart from others is that we are encouraging exhibitors to showcase more local products, instead of selling of foreign replicas or imported items,” Sandy shares.

“I think it’s only right that we sell and buy local.”

She share that the annual holiday bazaar, which was started in 2007, also tries to sell value-for-money products. She recalls that when she was in college, she can’t even buy “something nice” with her 20 pesos.

“In bazaars, the cheap finds really give your money more value. You really don’t have to be expensive or buy from abroad,” Sandy says.

She adds that this year, the bazaar has more young entrepreneurs as exhibitors that  sell trendy products at the Cubao X (also known as Cubao Expo), which is fast becoming a dining and art hub.

“It’s also easier to coordinate with young entrepreneurs because they can readily be found using Multiply and other social networking sites as marketing tools,” Sandy says.

She adds that getting young entrepreneurs together is something that she has committed herself to do. More than just an opportunity for profit, Sandy sees the bazaar as an effective training ground for people who like her wanted more out of their abilities.

“It’s really a challenge to get these young people to take the path that I once took,” she says.

She says she first brought up the idea of a bazaar with the administrative officer of Cubao X, and they both agreed that it should be non-profit.

“That decision turned out well not only for the exhibitors but for Cubao X as well,” says Sandy, adding that more and more people are now eagerly anticipating the annual bazaar.

Sandy, who also runs The Reading Room in Cubao X with her husband Benjamin, says the bazaar is part of her belief that spending more in this day and age has become unnecessary.
