MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA— Filipinos can search for information, images or data on the Web in a faster, more intuitive manner by optimizing search engine functions, according to a Google executive.

“As the Web evolves from a collection of texts to a rich media experience, and as user expectations evolve along with it, the challenge of helping people find what they need instantaneously from a vast, constantly changing sea of information has also grown,” said Jay Trinidad, regional product marketing manager, consumer products for Google Asia-Pacific.

The executive added that, in response, Google has been introducing search improvements – more than 100 for the first half of 2010 alone–focusing on the comprehensiveness, relevance, and speed of its search results.

In a day, Google receives over one billion search queries from the world and has been one of the most commonly used search engines by Filipinos.

Of the search improvements, Trinidad outlined four functions that would be useful to help Filipinos optimize the Web search engine. The search engine provides results that could be translated in a total of 50 languages, including Tagalog or Filipino.

Google Instant is a new search interface enhancement that makes it faster and easier to search by showing users relevant search results instantly, as they type. This happens when you key in the first word of your query.

Using predictive text, the search engine provides a list of possible word combinations in anticipation of what a user will search for, saving between 2 and 5 seconds per query because users do not have to finish typing or click on the “Search” button, said Trinidad.

Caffeine is another new function and is a search index that provides 50 percent fresher results for Web searches compared to its previous index and the largest collection of Web content Google has ever offered. Caffeine will be Google’s foundation in building a faster and a more comprehensive search engine that grows alongside the exponential growth in online content, said Trinidad.

Real-time search gives highly relevant and the freshest content from across the entire Web. Trinidad said this is not just about micro blogging because it includes content from news sites, blogs, web pages, public pages of social networks and more. Real-time search brings users information that is happening now — “in this moment”. To do this Google looks at more than a billion documents every single day and process hundreds of millions of daily changes.

Redesigned image search . Understanding that visual content is different from keyword searches, Google redesigned its Image Search interface design for speedy results. Since the roll out of the new Image search function, Trinidad says that one can scroll from one image to another and see bigger thumbnails of the image at once.

Trinidad explained that these improvements are aligned with Google’s original design principles, which combine innovative engineering with powerful technology, emphasize a clean, intuitive design, and ultimately focus on the user.

“Search isn’t something you’re born with, but with just a bit more inside information about new functions to use and simple tips, anyone can become a better searcher,” said Trinidad.

“We’re always working on ways to make search simpler and yet more powerful, so that anyone, including Filipinos, can search for anything in any language, at any time, from any device, and however they want, while still getting the results that they need, and perhaps along the way, discovering information that they never even knew existed.”
