VIRAC, CATANDUANES – One thing that I have associated with Catanduanes throughout the years is the humble pili nut.

Since I was a kid, I’ve tried to eat the nut raw (fresh from taking it out of the hard pointed shell with the use of a hammer), roasted, spicy and sweetened – equally good or even better than almond or macadamia nuts common in chocolates.

Some grocery stores in Manila sell sweetened pili nuts or if you have the fruit, follow these steps to create your own pili candy. To get fresh pili nuts, make sure to wait for the annual Bicol fair in Manila, just like this one last year.

Unlike the common peanut that you can buy anywhere, the pili nut is eyed by the Department of Agriculture as Bicol’s flagship industry crop, next to the coconut. Developments such as the pili nut cracker are eyed to help the revival of the pili nut industry in the country.

If you’re not convinced about the pili nut, did you know that some scientists consider the fat in pili nut to be superior olive oil, while the protein content is equal to soybeans and peanuts, which makes it an ultimate diet staple!

The country has been exporting pili nuts to Hawaii, Germany, France, Great Britain, Japan, and China since before World War II, according to the Plant Industry Digest. As the only country that processes pili nuts, there is a huge potential to make it a huge export product comparable to, yes, almonds.

If you are interested in entering the pili nut business, Entrepinoys Atbp. posted this donwloadable manual.

Rosemarie Diaz-Battung, owner of the 70-year-old Albay Pilinut Candy factory, said that aside from being delicious and nutritious, the pili fruit has other uses. The fiber covering the nutshell can also be eaten while the shell can be an alternative to charcoal.

So before thinking of buying imported nuts, how about considering pili nuts? Not only is it uniquely Filipino, you will also be helping the livelihood of farmers in this province.
