DANAO, BOHOL— On his third and final term, Mayor Thomas Louis Gonzaga wants to further boost adventure-tourism in their town and give more jobs to his constituents.

The Extreme Adventure Tour (EAT) Danao program is his brainchild and promotes the town as an eco-tourism destination, outside of Bohol’s natural attractions like the Chocolate Hills, tarsiers and Loboc River.

In Danao, visitors can try zipline, plunge, kayaking, caving and other activities.  After his landslide victory in the recent elections, the newly proclaimed town chief says it’s time to give back to the people of Danao.

“We plan to give it back to the people through more participation in the community,” says Gonzaga, adding that by boosting tourism further, more people will have jobs.

EAT Danao allowed more locals to get trained to assist tourists in different adventure activities, becoming their main source of livelihood. “When the tourism is alive, livelihood is alive,” says Gonzaga.

He says Danao is building what is touted as the longest zipline in Asia, which will open in July.

June Carlo Pablo, a local adventure-tour guide, says Gonzaga is well-loved by the people of Danao because of his efforts to improve their town, which is about two hours away from Tagbilaran, the provincial capital.

“He doesn’t have any qualified opponent here and if not for him, we won’t be having this kind of job that is close to our own home and culture,” says Pablo.

Pablo, meanwhile, says he wishes the mayor will also improve access to healthcare services in Danao so they need not to go to nearby towns for hospitalization.
