TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA—It is the story that every kid and young-at-heart could relate to; it is about looking for the best gift to give your loved ones this Christmas season.
“The Great Big Giant Christmas Story” is an original libretto that follows the life of Giant Jack, a child who asks the help of his friends from the forest to make the perfect Christmas gift for his kind father, beautiful mother and happy sister.
In his young mind, the perfect gift for Christmas is one that is giant and expensive so he urged his elfin and dwarf friends to create a large blanket to warm his father, a beautiful necklace for his mother, and a giant cake for his little sister.
To this, he sang to his friends: “What is the greatest gift of all? Think like a giant, don’t think small.”So his friends promised to give him giant gifts after a day’s work.
On the eve of Christmas Day, Jack presented his gifts to his family and was shocked to find that the “giant gifts” he prepared for them were actually small.
His family, however, told him that they are great gifts and that they loved it all. His father loved the rainbow-colored scarf, while his mother loved the bracelet and his little sister was happy with the sweet cupcake, all because they were given by him.
The story was told in vivid colors, with most of the characters such as Jack and his parents portrayed as shadows.
The play, which was part of the nighttime holiday attractions at the Bonifacio High Street in The Fort, is said to be the first architecturally-projected shadow play that uses building mapping technology to show the animation and moving shadows…
What I like about the show is the straightforward message explaining the lesson of the story: that the greatest gift one can give this Christmas is free. A hug, a kind word or a kiss meant more in showing our love than giving away expensive toys.
True enough, happiness during the festive holiday season seem simpler for young kids because they are easily appreciate the small things. As for older people, the story is a reminder to give a gift from the heart and not only because it is an obligation to do so every Christmas.
