MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA— Looking for the manuscript of Dr. Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere in its Spanish context can be quite a task, especially if you are not aware that the only place in the country that has it is the National Library.
But the search for one of Rizal’s major literary pieces is now easier because it now has has its first bilingual edition published for both Spanish and English-speaking readers alike.
This sesquicentennial version is a reproduction of the Noli’s first edition supplemented by philologist Isaac Donoso with over 1,200 notes of the author’s additions, deletions and emendations found on both the Berlin edition and the original manuscript.
“There are a lot of people, like myself, who have come to this country keen on looking for a copy of the Noli Me Tangere’s first edition. Now, you can visit any bookstore here and find the original document through this book,” says Donoso.
The original Spanish text has been printed adjacent to its English translation including passages that has been deleted to maintain accuracy with Rizal’s writing.
Textual lines of the novel are also numbered with its own extensive bibliography as reference for readers, students and academicians as well.
“This book is a landmark in both the Filipino and Spanish literature,” says Spanish envoy to the Philippines Jorge Domecq. “Nothing will compare to the experience of reading this version of Dr. Rizal’s work, and you will definitely find something more than meets the eye.”
The historical bilingual edition is a collaboration of Instituto Cervantes de Manila and Vibal Foundation released as part of Rizal’s 150th birth anniversary.
