MAKATI CITY, PHILIPPINES – With the advent of social networking, conveying information is no longer a simple linear process. The challenge now for both media and advertising is how it can keep up with the fast-shifting attention span of the ‘digital’ public.
The film industry is not an exception either, thus the birth of the 180 Microcinema Festival.
This online international festival encourages and promotes self-made or indie filmmakers to harness digital platforms as means to showcase their creativity and to foster a dynamic online film-making culture.
The term ‘180‘ here is the catch for the web-based competition part, as film-makers will be tasked to create the ultimate “cinematic experience” all packed in a 180-second clip. An entire story must be portrayed in 3 minutes, no more no less.
As it uses the Web, an entry should be able to cater to a global audience who will vote for for the Audience Choice awardees in three different categories: Narrative, Experimental and Documentary.
Those selected will then be judged by 2011 Academy-Award Winning Producer Stefanie Walmsley (God of Love, 2010) along with a panel made of key people behind the films Valkyrie and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, among others.
The winning film-makers will get $30,000-worth of production funds to collaborate on 180-second films as pitches for a Transmedia Development Deal besides the exposure to international film industry leaders.
For more information on how to join the contest, visit the 180 Microcinema website.
