TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA – Renowned Filipino painter Elmer Borlongan believes young artists should actively share their works and join more art fairs.
“More than eyeing for foreign curators and art galleries to notice and support your work, sharing your art also fosters more art fairs because organizers see a collective interest among established and emerging artists,” says Borlongan.
A multi-awarded painter, Borlongan’s works were featured in last week’s Manila Art 2011 exhibit. His visual translation of Dong Abay’s “God Bless Our Trip”, entitled “Batang EDSA”, was chosen as the face of the three-day art fair.
Born in Manila in 1967, Borlongan is known for his paintings depicting the dark side of Manila. He mostly employs a vivid albeit figurative realist expressionism style in painting.
His sympathetic depiction of the realities and lies prevalent in contemporary society caught the attention of collectors and art galleries based locally and abroad. The Zamboanga-based painter, however, was quick to put that his achievements came subtly and that he had to earn it.
“I’ve been painting for decades now and part of the things I’ve learned in doing it for a really long time is having the heart to share it,” says Borlongan, a Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artist Awardee in 1994.
The concept of struggle, he says, has always lurked around visual arts but this must not dissuade young artists to achieve their goals even when faced with the lack of avenues.
Borlongan says young artists must never stop creating and that they should maintain the persistence needed to find out the right avenue to show their works.
Borlongan also delved into digital “finger painting” using the iPad for a collaborative work with renowned poet Vim Nadera Jr., entitled “Rizalpabeto”, which was put on display at the Manila Art exhibit.
The artist created 24 illustrations depicting the alphabet with respect to life and works of our national hero.
