BIÑAN, LAGUNA – Dr. Jose Rizal was born in Calamba but it was in the neighboring town of Biñan where the national hero got his first formal education.
Both his parents, Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso, are from Biñan.
The United Artists for Cultural Conservation and Development City of Biñan Inc. (UACCD) staged a play, titled “SI RIZAL AT AKO: Isang Pagpupugay at Pagkilala sa Natatanging Anak ng Biñan“, last Saturday in celebration of the Filipino hero’s 150th birth anniversary.
Script by Raymond Vergara, the play tackles not only Rizal’s life in Biñan but also the relevance of his patriotism and sacrifice to the Filipino people.
The performers are members of the Biñan Youth Performance Council. It was directed by BJ Borja with original music is composed by Singapore-based Cinderella Mayo.
“This is Biñan’s simple way of honoring the hero who had so many accomplishments and it is but an honor for us to make his heroism relevant from the films,” says UACCD executive director Dr. Rosauro Sta. Maria.
However, Sta. Maria laments on how Biñan locals are mostly apathetic in taking pride of hailing Rizal, especially the youth. Since last year, the town of Biñan has been making efforts to preserve its cultural heritage, practices and forms through continuous promotion of cultural programs.
“It is sad that most people here just don’t care and don’t pay much attention to these things. I’m afraid that people will become too busy on technology and most of us will just stop caring for our culture,” laments Sta. Maria.
Filipinos should realize, he adds, the need to value our culture the way Rizal and other national heroes did during their time.
“We are doing this to influence the youth to have that sense of nationalism and identity as Filipinos. I believe that if we have just loved our country the way Rizal and other heroes did, there would be no corrupt and greed officials but honest public servants,” he says.
