MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – A common desire to create a venue that highlights the achievements of today’s Filipino youth led brothers Neil and Jonard Palteng, and high school friends Camille Crisostomo and Nicole Santos to create Manila Kid.
Manila Kid is described as a “movement that promotes the country’s young and vibrant image through the efforts of the youth”. The group intends to do this via an online magazine, creating merchandise and through social advocacy.
Launched last May, Neil says they intend to create an online platform wherein young Filipinos can share their innate talents as well as entrepreneurial skills.
“I wanted to delve beyond the landscape and common issues and instead focus on how I, as a youth, see this city or the country for that matter. So I focused on writing about the rich pool of talents that our country has,” said Neil, who assumes the role of the movement’s Executive Director.
The online magazine showcases the Filipino youth and their varied interests. There are some aspiring entrepreneurs who shared how they started their businesses. Others publish poems and literary pieces inspired by their experiences.
More importantly, Neil said they intend to inspire social responsibility by featuring youth groups that support various causes and advocacies. Also , Neil said Manila Kid also allows bloggers like him to follow a more meaningful direction instead of writing simply for personal reasons.
“Writing trains a person to organize his thoughts. Imagine how much people you can influence when you choose to write about something else apart from yourself,” said Neil, a Management Economics major from the Ateneo de Manila University.
Neil believes the youth can be instrumental in uplifting the waning spirit of patriotism among Filipinos. The solution, he said, is loving and committing oneself to whatever chosen endeavor.
“You have be passionate about what you choose to do. In the end, it’s your vision that will make you achieve what you want to do.”
