MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – In line with to the national celebration of Dr. Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday in June, Rock Ed Philippines has collaborated with local musicians on a tribute album called “Rock Rizal”.

Rock Ed Philippines is a non-government organization advocating alternative means of giving quality education.

In this initiative, Rock Ed executives Gang Badoy and Pepe Diokno see music as an effective medium in teaching the ideals of Rizal to the new generation.

Ely Buendia, Sandwich, Gloc-9, Ebe Dancel, Jett Pangan, Peryodiko, Hijo, Aiza Seguerra, and Radioactive Sago Project have pledged to contribute to the landmark album.

“My goal is that at least somehow through the songs, students can look into the direction which Jose Rizal took,” Badoy said.

Diokno and Badoy want the album to show the exemplary attributes of Rizal as a hero but they emphasized more on the value of giving the new and old generation a realistic understanding of Rizal as a person.

“Rizal has this caricatured image in text or when taught in school. The goal of the album is really to humanize Rizal,” Diokno said.

The album comprises of nine songs, some of which tackling Rizal’s side as a man who also fell in love and a “common” Filipino.

“We know only of the static Rizal in the peso coin, or as a monument, or a street sign. I think the people can relate with Rizal with the way some of the songs pointed out his imperfections,” Badoy said.

Badoy and Diokno stressed that they do not intend the album to completely push aside traditional sources of history, like books, but rather as a complementary medium to bring facts to life.

“It’s a creative way of showing that Rizal’s ideals, as expressed in his writing, are still very relevant today. If we show it differently, then maybe the youth can find some sense in re-learning it,” said Diokno.

Badoy said they are still polishing the titles of the songs for the album and added that once completed, all songs will be released online for free. A collaborative single and a follow-up concert are also slated in June and in September.
