QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— The Filipino dance group Legit Status is hoping to get support from fans as it prepares to compete at the 2011 World Hip Hop Dance Championship in Las Vegas this July.
Composed of eight college students from different universities, Legit Status has been the country’s official representative to the world’s most respected international hip hop dance competition since 2009.
However, the group needs additional support for expenses including airfare, food and accommodations during the trip, according to Legit Status member Gabby Dario.
As part of their fund raising activity, Legit Status is set to gather local dance groups in the country in a dance concert on June 25. Gabby says the funds will be used for the competition abroad.
Aside from the support of the public, he says the team is also hoping to get the support of government. She adds the dance team has been consistently finishing in the Top Ten of international competitions and deserves to get support like the Azkals football team or Smart Gilas basketball team.
Legit Status will compete in the “Varsity Division” of the World Hip Hop championship. This division is for participants who are 18 years old and below. The World Hip Hop championship is supported by Hip Hop International which happens to be the same creators of “America’s Best Dance Crew” show. A maximum of three teams per age group may represent the country.
Gabby says this entails a rigorous audition process with the Hip Hop International. Fortunately, Legit Status has been constantly invited to join the world championship. She adds that the group has ranked 7th and 6th in the preliminaries of the “Varsity Division” in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
“We’ve been intensely preparing for the past two months and we plan on working even harder since we’ve only got a little over two months until the competition proper,” Gabby says.
Aside from Gabby Dario, Legit Status is composed of Rammy Bitong, Mark Tabangcura, Korinne Aniban.Leo Segundo, Justin Silva, Derek Clutario and Suzie Agustin.
