MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA— The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Laboratory High School (PUPLHS) chorale received a gold certificate and trophy in the 1st Vietnam International Choir Festival and Competition.

The PUPLHS chorale bagged second place in the “Mixed Youth Choice” category behind the Indonesia-based Diponegro University Choir.

The competition was held in Hoi An, Vietnam from March 16-20.

Prior to the competition, the PUPLHS had expressed their need for funding so that each member would be able to join the choir competition. Thankfully, their efforts paid off.

“We never mind not winning a cash prize because the experience and the exposure itself is enough to make us happy and be inspired to do even better,” says Jonathan Jarin.

Jonathan hopes they can serve as an inspiration to many young groups because they were able to achieve something for the country despite meager resources.

“Our story is the perfect example of ‘If there’s a will, there’s a way’ because nothing has stopped us for from doing what we really want to achieve,” he says.

The choir is now planning to join another chorale competition in Indonesia next year.

Jonathan says it would be a big help for the children to get more exposure from international competitions. This, he says, also allows them to have a deeper appreciation of other Asian cultures.

I believe there is a lack of information in this article. PUPLHS tied up 2nd place with Coro San Benildo (Philippines) on the Youth Category. Coro San Benildo was another Filipino Contingent to the competition, the group did not only win second prize (1st runner up) in the Youth Category. But was also the CHAMPION(category winner) in the Folklore category. FYI Ilocos Norte National High School-Samiweng Singers another group from the Philippines also became Champion(category winner) for the Children’s Choir Category. And it is but devastating that this two was never in a way recognized not only by the media by the masses, etc. Reffer to this website to see the official results.

It is just right that we honor receptively the titles we give to people. We should be sensitive when it comes to this cases.

In the world of competition. GOld has been seen always to be of the purest reward a group or a person can achieve. That when a gold medal or whatsoever is received. It is assumed that he/she/they WON-1st place- Champion….

in such cases we must be sensitive in giving out statements such as “Won a gold….” we must further justify or explain the acquisition of this reward. FYI interkultur has a different set of grading competitions…that they somehow grade it as in…like in universities..that even silver certificates and gold..has different levels…in this case it should never be assumed that one wins when one receives a gold..for it is possible that 3 of you get a gold cert. because of the grade you have acquired. Pls be sensitive on this cases!
