QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Marz Zafe believes an artist must not confine himself to just one medium if he wants to get his message across.
Marz, who also considers himself as an environmentalist, was commissioned a few years ago by Deco Crete QC Construction Products to create paintings but using concrete as his canvas.
Concrete is a much more difficult medium than paper, but Marz thought it is also a way for him to spread awareness about environmental protection.
With the use of plain concrete or cement as his canvas and a pigmented acid as his watercolor, Marz can give concrete the appearance of more sophisticated granite or vinyl tiles.
The designs, he says, tell a certain message about the environment.
“Sure it’s a rather commercialized way of telling the message but it’s one of the more effective ways to stress to people what I am fighting for,” Marz says.
He says he tries to convey to people “that they are part of the problem” and “they have the opportunity to be part of the solution.”
Marz says other artists should try to explore other media not only for personal learning but also to experiment on which medium can reflect the artist’s advocacy best.
“You don’t have any idea how many artists are frustrated on how to get the message of their advocacy across. For me, this medium is a niche that I am taking advantage of.”
The artist’s sample concrete paintings are currently being exhibited at the Worldbex International Expositions in World Trade Center in Pasay City.
