QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – The artworks of Filipino artists who participated in an art festival in Florence, Italy have been brought to the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman in an exhibit.
The Bozzetos is a series of artworks by 26 artists, which includes Leo Abaya, Alfred Capiral, Gerardo Lucena, Jun Yee, RM De Leon, Phyllis Zaballero, among others.
The Filipino artists were part of the Festival dell’Arte Filippina (Philippine Cultural Festival), wherein a delegation of Filipino artists were brought to Florence in an art exchange program with Italian art professionals courtesy of Italy’s Fondazione Del Bianco.
The artworks vary in medium, from paintings, photographic techniques, to computer manipulation.
The topics covered by the artists also vary, from birth and death, still life, social commentaries, Filipino diaspora, ecological and gender issues, and native myths and legends.
In an interview, exhibit curator Ruben Defeo said the Bezzotos exhibit was brought to the Philippines to showcase to Filipino art enthusiasts the success of Filipinos in getting the attention of foreign art connoisseurs.
“When we were invited by members of the Fondazione Del Bianco, they were surprised that the Philippines also had deep focus on academic concerns and consciousness for the arts.”
Defeo, who also teaches at the UP College of Fine Arts, said that Filipino artists are not far behind from world’s best artists. “We have among the most creative minds and we only need to be more comfortable with our skills as artists.”
Defeo said the exhibit in UP Diliman would run from February 7 to March 31. “We hope that our countrymen would view these artworks and spur love for the arts.”
