MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – For someone who has become a major influence to younger Filipino artists, Arturo Luz remains unfailing in sharing his art.
Born in 1926, Arturo Rogerio Luz studied painting at the University of Santo Tomas and later on in prestigious art schools in New York and Paris, where he developed a keen eye for subjects for his paintings.
Named National Artist for the Visual Arts in 1997, his more renowned works include Bagong Taon, Vendador de Flores, Skipping Rope, Candle Vendors, Procession.
Referred to as the “painter’s painter”, most buyers of his works are often artists themselves.
Luz has earned numerous recognitions from prestigious art institutions abroad, including being one of two representatives for the “Asian Artists in Crystal” in 1955.
His work was also exhibited at the “Arte de America y Espana” in Madrid, his painting among the selected few exhibited all over Europe.
In 1969, his painting shifted from non-linear to abstract, focusing on lines and structure, earning him acclaim as a master of understated and sophisticated art.
Though he turned to sculpture at a much later time, Luz flawlessly produced his signature totemic yet still abstracted sculptures made of mild steel metal plates, influenced by artist-friends one of which is Fernando Zobel.
For decades now, Luz has been instrumental in helping train contemporary Filipino artists through exhibitions in his art gallery (called Luz Gallery).
As part of a recollection of Arturo Luz and his artworks, Alliance Française de Manille will hold an exhibit, including never before exhibited paintings, collages and sculptures.
Titled “Arturo Luz: Renewal”, the exhibit will commence on January 13 and will be on view until February 3 at the Total Gallery of the Alliance Française de Manille.
