TAIPEI, TAIWAN – Taiwan-based filmmaker Wi-Ding Ho recently won the Best New Director Award at the prestigious 47th Golden Horse Film Festival for the film “Pinoy Sunday”.

Pinoy Sunday is about the lives of two migrant factory workers Manuel (Epi Quizon) and Dado (Bayani Agbayani) whose weekend revolved around an abandoned red couch and their yearning for comfort while working in a small bicycle factory.

Also starring in the film are fellow Filipino actors Alessandra de Rossi,  playing the role of Celia, and Meryll Soriano who plays Ana, Dado’s mistress.

With other minor yet significant characters along the way, the two tread the outskirts of Taipei carrying with them only two things, the heavy couch, and their sense of optimism.

Being Malaysian and having studied abroad, Wi-Ding Ho felt himself an outsider coming back to Malaysia. During a day in Taipei where he decided to work, Wi-Ding Ho felt a sense of belonging upon seeing a group of Filipinos outside a church, all looking very happy.

Unlike other films depicting the lives of overseas Filipino workers, the film sheds some light on hope and strengthened friendships amid hardships of Pinoys, as workers in a foreign land.

Wi-Ding Ho is set to visit the country for the Philippine premiere of Pinoy Sunday.

The film, co-produced Filipino filmmaker Mark Meily, was chosen as the opening film for the 12th Cinemanila International Film Festival that began December 1 and runs until December 5.
