BRUSSELS, BELGIUM – Indie film “Donor” made the Philippines proud in the recently concluded 37th Brussels International Film Festival (BIFF) after taking home the Best Film Award and a Best Actress plum for lead actress Meryll Soriano.
Directed by Mark Meily, the film tackles the controversial issue of organ trafficking, which most poor Filipinos resort to for money despite being illegal.
In the film, Lizette (Soriano) agreed to become a kidney donor to an Arab patient to raise funds. Despite a ban, she decides to marry the patient just so the transplant would consummate.
Baron Giesler, renowned for starring in award-winning indie movies, plays Lizette’s live-in partner.
The film also won major awards earlier this year at the Cinemalaya 2010 festival, including best performance citations for Geisler and Soriano as well as supporting actress Karla Pambid. The film also won Best Production Design.
Brilliante Mendoza, who won Best Director in the 62nd Cannes festival for his film “Kinatay” also received a Visionary Award from BIFF for his innovation and countless contribution to independent films.
