MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – In his Facebook page, Carlos Castaño states he is not afraid to share his personal stories with the world. Armed with an acoustic guitar, he he strums his way to listeners’ hearts with tales of innocent love.

The singer-songwriter has a few songs under his belt, including the upbeat “Ain’t No Other Place” he composed for Team Manila, which is intended for a tourism campaign.

He also performed in the recent Baybeats music festival in Singapore, which gathered musicians from all over Southeast Asia. He has also completed an album titled City Light Soundtrack, released on iTunes.

Learning to write at the tender age of 14, Carlos says he started writing about his first “encounters” with the opposite sex. He says the naïve and innocent definitions of love while growing up brought out the writer in him.

Carlos took formal lessons in music but sought other means to learn more. More important, he says, is that his family shares his love for music.

“My parents are both very musical. My dad is still in a rock and roll band until now. They’re the reason why I got into music,” says Carlos, who cites as influences solo artists like John Mayer, Ray LaMontagne, Jeff Buckley and M. Ward.

When he is not writing, he says he often indulges in another favorite past time -  reading comic books. “When I’m not playing or writing, I fight crime as the Lantern of Earth Sector 2814, the gateway to the multi-verse,” he says.

Like any musician, Carlos says the fulfillment in what he does lies in the acceptance of listeners. His debut album City Light Soundtrack contains a dozen songs that he hopes  can strike a chord to whoever listens to it.

“Some of the songs in the album contain personal stories that I hope listeners can relate to,” Carlos says.

Carlos further says the music industry is missing out on a lot of raw and real talent in the Philippines.

“There’s a lot talent here in the Philippines that should be recognized and promoted more. Just last night I caught Outer Hope (a local band) and their music was so beautiful that I cried,” Carlos says, adding that music is a gift that is meant to be shared.
