NEW YORK – Chapter 2, composed of Filipino performers all based in the United States, is set to become the first Filipino group to play in the world renowned Carnegie Hall in New York.
The group, which won Artist of the Year in the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2006, promises to perform an homage to Original Pilipino Music.
Chapter 2, whose music is categorized as pop-funk, is one of the most successful Filipino bands in the US. The carrier single “Sa Kin Na Lang”, from their debut EP now available on CD Baby, is a Tagalog love song that’s meant to reach out to Filipinos everywhere.
It took them four years to come up with an album, but the group says they would rather create original songs than just settle for covers.
Coming from different regions of the Philippines, the group is led by Dennis Sy, whose used to be part of the New York singing group Alibata.
Cutuy Herrero, whose father is Subas Herrero (of Champoy fame), Grace Hernandez and Jan Paraiso add a different dimension and soulful flavor to the group with their powerful vocals.
Noel Tampac, who plays acoustic guitar, is the first Filipino to conduct in the first Filipino American Choral Competition held at Lincoln Center in New York. He is now responsible for the harmonies of the band, backed by lead guitarist Carlo Tampac and bassist Sheldon Magbanua.
Keyboardist and Quezon native Ken Villafranca used to be a pit musician for various Mayi Theatherstage productions and other notable Filipino singer concerts while drummer Wenchie Olitan provides the beat for the group.
The group has also performed as front act and back-up for Filipino superstars such as Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera in various venues in the US.
