PASAY CITY, METRO MANILA – Outsourcing continues to be a lucrative industry, but there is a need for Filipino artists in the animation industry to band together to maximize their potential.
The group Tuldok Animation seeks to unite Filipino artists and in the process make the industry even bigger.
“Most Filipino artists work for themselves, but it’s more fruitful if all these artists would come together in a consortium to create original animation content, that we can proudly say is ours,” says Ben Carandang, Tuldok Animation co-founder.
According to Carandang, the outsourcing business of animation in the country is worth $110 million, proof that given the adequate resources and the will to do it, the local animation industry can still grow.
He says part of his group’s goal is to “magnify” Filipino talent in the arts.
Carandang adds that for 25 years, the Philippines has become a prime outsourcing destination for animation but Filipino artists still need to realize that they can use intellectual capital to become entrepreneurs.
“Filipinos are innately talented but they don’t exploit their intellectual capital. They fail to recognize that they can use it for creative entrepreneurship,” Carandang says.
For Tuldok Animation, “creative entrepreneurship” is a realistic goal.
The group, derived from the Filipino word “tuldok” which means “dot,” or the very basic part of drawing, also aims to nurture local artists and push for the creation of original Filipino-made animation.
After gaining support from the National Center for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 2006 for their short animation film entitled “Libingan,” Tuldok Animation is seeking to undertake more projects.
“Part of our future endeavors is to animate Filipino folk tales,” Carandang says.
“The patronage of local animated films in the Philippines is really low. The lack of patronage of what’s truly Filipino is the problem. We have to change the mind set that just because the artists are Filipino, that our creations will never be at par with foreign animated films.”
He laments that most foreign animated films actually employ the talents of Filipino artists. Carandang also says there is lack of Filipino animators in the country due to the lack of interest on the part of today’s youth.
“Most kids would be pushed to take the usual courses in college. That’s not bad at all but the arts can also be a lucrative and developmental area that students should consider to pursue,” he says.
He says Tuldok Animation will continue to work to “reshape” the people’s mindset toward Filipino artists in the animation industry.
