QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – While it’s true that this band likes making fun of ordinary things and issues concerning today’s teenagers, Odat says their music has made them stronger as a band.
They originally named themselves Odatnarat but manager Marco De Leon came up with the name Odat for easier recall.
The band is composed of vocalist Nel Lopez, RJ Alvarez on lead guitar, Chic Munoz on bass and Mack Andres on drums. The four share the same liking for on-line game Dota, from which the band also attributes their chosen name.
“Masaya kasi ito lang yung alam kong gawin,” says Nel, referring to his role as songwriter.
RJ and Nel played in the same band while Chic and Mack had their respective bands. Odat was formed after the four met during a gig at the Center for the Arts in Timog Avenue.
Nel shares that the band slightly took a break due to demands of work and school, which took a toll on their performance. After some personal reflection, they figured that the Odat was worth saving.
Odat is subtly making its way to the ears and hearts of the young masses. The infectious quality of their songs reflects on Nel as a keen observer.
“Pag may nakikita akong kakaiba sa isang gig, gagawan ko na ng kanta yun,” he says. He shares the band has recorded 10 songs out of the compositions he made with RJ, regarded as the “silent artist” in the band.
One of their more popular songs is Dota, which talks about a relationship marred by the guy’s infatuation with the online game. Another song Unlitxt is a shout out to mobile phone users.
The relationship between the four has become stronger and, they say, their individual strengths and weaknesses reflect in their music.
Odat is part of Blaster Music‘s roster of bands that also includes Paramita and Reklamo.
