CALOOCAN CITY, METRO MANILA – Cipriano Cermeno II, popularly known as Redford White, brought laughter to local television just when Filipinos were longing for pure wit and humor. No wonder, the news of his passing struck the hearts of his fans who expressed their condolences on the Internet.
Redford died at 54 after suffering from complications due to cancer in his lungs and brain at his home Maligaya Park Subdivision, Fairview at 6:47 a.m., according to an INQUIRER.net report. His passing was also tweeted by his friend and APO Hiking Society member Jim Paredes.
Paredes was one of the first to tweet about Redford’s death on Sunday morning, narrating that he was able to have a last hug with him the day before. “I have been expecting this. My only consolation is that his physical suffering has stopped. I will never forget you dear friend. I love you,” he said on Twitter.
Actress Ruffa Guttierez, who starred in the ABS-CBN show Kokey with Redford, also tweeted: “Woke up to sad news … I will cherish our ‘Kokey’ days and remember you with a smile.”
Yahoo Philippines also ran updates on Redford’s death in its Fit To Post blog. ABS-CBNnews.com also reported that Redford topped trending topics on Twitter after more Filipinos expressed their condolences on the site. See Twitter entries on this #redford white.
Redford is also best-known for playing partner to Eric Quizon in the 90s TV show Buddy en Sol, considered one of the best Filipino sitcoms by entertainment site Pep.ph
In the Pinoy Exchange forum, bloggers “Skyword” and “Derrick Rose” also expressed their condolences and consider Redford’s death a big loss to the local entertainment industry.
Gerry Plaza also blogged about the news for Yahoo Fit To Post. One reader “Bhabysunil” said Redford is her favorite comedian of all time and that “there is no one like him”.
The current generation of Filipinos may not be too familiar about Redford’s work aside from his more recent shows on TV. But for many Filipinos who grew up watching him on TV and in movies, he will remain an icon.
