QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— Sensual and direct are the two words to describe the original songs of the four-piece band The Naked Lights.
Unlike most bands, vocalist Ymi Castel says they prefer to sing original songs during gigs, not minding whether the audience likes it or not. The band, whose music is intended to make listeners get up and dance, cites influences like Bloc Party, Gossip, The Temper Trap, Blood Red Shoes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric, Interpol, The Rascals and The Smiths.
Ymi, who is the band’s principal songwriter, says putting words in her bandmates’ melodies is her way of expressing her feelings and other “stories” that run in her head.
“Our songs are sensual but compared to foreign music, ours is more tolerable. It’s not really my intention to use sensual words just to be different, but it just so happens that it suits the song,” she says.
The songs Separated, All the Way, and This Irony of Shameless Look are all “personally connected” to Ymi. “Separated,” she says, “is about good for nothing ex-boyfriends yet they leave us with scars that remain forever.”
This Irony of Shameless Look is about her relationship with a guy, which turned out to be the opposite of what she thought would happen, hence, the irony. All The Way is by far their most requested song, which Ymi nonchalantly says is about her desire for a particular guy.
“We only want our audience to dance and enjoy the rawness of our music,” she says.
