LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — Filipino broadcaster Cher Calvin is nominated for another Emmy award this year. A former newscaster in the Philippines, she now works for KTLA-TV News where she anchors two shows, The Weekend News and KTLA Weekend Prime News.
On her Twitter account on Friday, LA-based Calvin wrote: “Ok! Dad now knows I told him in person! So, Twitter Crew! Just found out when I landed at JFK that I’m nominated for an Emmy Award!
”
She already won an Emmy for Best Newscast in 2007 also for KTLA TV’s Morning Show. This is her third nomination after also getting nominated in 2008. Prior to her latest nomination, she bagged three Golden Mike Awards for KTLA, two for Best Public Affairs Program, “Access LA” and one Golden Mike for the “KTLA Morning Show.”
She hosted the weekly political round table talk show “Points of View” on local network ABS-CBN, where she received two Golden Dove Awards in 2000 and 2002. She moved back to the US and later joined KTLA/CW more than five years ago after working at Las Vegas’ Fox affiliate KVVU as co-anchor in the station’s “FOX5 News This Morning.”
Filipino friends of Calvin both here and in the Philippines posted messages of congratulations.
Former actress Antoinette Taus, who is also based in the U.S., wrote: “That’s awesome Cher!!! Congratulations! You deserve it!” Former ABS-CBN colleagues also sent their congratulations.
Calvin has also been doing field reporting for KTLA-TV, together with 1994 Miss USA Lu Parker who competed in the Miss Universe Pageant held that same year in Manila. Herself a beauty queen, Calvin was first runner-up in the 1994 Miss New York contest, and later competed in the Miss USA search for the representative to the Miss Universe Pageant.
A Mass communications graduate of a New York university, Cher worked as a researcher for US magazines before going to on-camera work. Born and raised in New York, she’s the only child of former actor Roger Calvin and the late Delia Santos, a psychologist.
If you are wondering if Cher is going to visit the Philippines anytime soon, here’s her answer: “Not Manila bound. Maybe in a few months.”
