Alternative-pop finds its muse in Damsel in Distort

QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA — This all-girl band is as pleasing to the eyes as soothing to the ears when you hear their music.  Members of Damsel in Distort describe their music as alternative-pop – think of it as a hybrid of Paramita and Imago.

Their signature (and most requested) cover?  Not An Addict by K’s choice, which pretty much defines the band’s sound. They do have original compositions in Tatlong Linggo, Lisan and It Will Come To Pass. (Watch video of Tatlong Linggo produced by loQal.ph)

Bassist Veronica “Nix” Macato writes most of their songs, some she says inspired by the band’s collective experience while others are by-products of her personal thoughts. Along with  guitarist Marie Claire “Maki” Estrellado and drummer Rose Katherine “Kat” Gariando, they were previously named Fifth Sister, but it was a short-lived trio after Nix had to go to Singapore for work.

Then along came Marianne “Meg” Gorospe, who had her own band Bandaga during her college days at Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

And so Damsel in Distort was born, their music shaped by their favorite bands like the aforementioned K’s Choice as well as Moonpools and Caterpillars, The Sundays, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Ramones, Garbage, No Doubt, Skunk Anansie and, OPM-wise, Cynthia Alexander and the Eraserheads.

“Our music is something that people can relate to because it’s about the experiences of real people. We want to be remembered as a band, not really commercial although our music is radio-friendly,” says Nix.

Maki, on the other hand, gets inspiration from reading and treats music as a channel where she can express her emotions while Meg’s daily mood is somehow dictated by what band or music she listens to.

The four “damsels” try to squeeze practice time in-between day jobs: Nix and Meg  work as call center agents while Maki works as an IT consultant. Kat is still in school currently learning her way to become a nurse; so busy, in fact , that Mel Alvarez subbed for her on drums during a studio performance at loQal.ph.
