MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – Hip hop or not, music is life and life is music, according to Achille Dipita Toube aka MC Narco.

The leader of the German-French Les Coudes de Productions team visited Manila last week and collaborated with rap musicians from Tondo as part of the Rap in Tondo cultural exchange program. Music, not essentially hip hop, can be created by anyone especially now that digital synthesizers are free and accessible, according to him.

“The basic things you will need now to create these rhythms include a laptop computer with a synthesizer software and speakers,” says Toube.

“The beats that you hear now are created based on mixed digital sounds from musical instruments like drums, bass or guitar. Then, add some claps and then, let’s have metronome for regular pulse,” explains the Cameroon native during a workshop with Tondo Tribe rappers.

MC Narco, also known as  DJ Joe Kenga in some clubs, says he is able to create a beat while listening to a song and taking a portion of it, which then serves as a base to create a hip hop rhythm that Tondo Tribe can rap along with.

More than being technically adept at operating synthesizers and other equipment, he says it still boils down to having an ear for music in order to become very good in his craft.

“How do I know what beats to mix? I’m an artist,” the Germany-based MC proudly says.

And as one, he makes sure to spread his knowledge to aspiring hip hop musicians, both here and abroad, as his own way of giving back and encouraging more people to hone their talent. “By collaborating with other artists, like those from Tondo, we also learn a lot and that is music, you inspire others and you let them inspire you,” he says.
