QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – I’m not a big fan of Tears for Fears though I grew up listening to them (courtesy of a vinyl record my dad kept at home) . The only song I loved from them was “Mad World.”
But then they had their concert last Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum. I had to change my attitude towards the group, especially after they opened their concert with an orchestral version of “Mad World”s – the best rendition I’ve heard since Gary Jules’s piano cover.
Filled to the brim, the Araneta Coliseum was booming from outside with tens of thousands of screaming fans, many of whom are actually in their early 40’s having listened to their songs when they were younger. The organizers of the event, Ovation Productions, had actually run out of tickets days before the concert. They had to sell standing room tickets just hours before the start. People were undeterred by the idea of standing in a huge crowd.
The orchestral version of “Mad World” was actually short, but was later followed up by their second most popular song, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” The next set of songs included “Secret World,” “Closest Thing to Heaven,” “Seeds of Love”, among others. Even after singing “Mad World” as their opening song, the other half of Tears for Fears Curt Smith, told the crowd they’ll be singing the song again, this time using original instruments from the 1982 version. The crowd went wild.
Supposedly, the last song of the group was “Head Over Heels,” a good ending for a great concert. But with the crowd screaming for an encore, they went back on stage and Roland Orzabal said they’ll be singing “Woman in Chains.” This was quickly followd by “Shout,” which made the ending much better.
Prior to the encore, the camera panned to the crowd celebrity Korina Sanchez-Roxas who was also watching. Unfortunately, when she shot an “L” sign in the air, she was booed constantly. It was an awkward, ugly scene especially since it involved the wife of a political figure. Radio jock Mo Twister had a scathing comment about Korina’s actions that night.
In total, Tears for Fears sang 19 songs (two versions of Mad World), including the two encore songs. There were already a lot of post-concert buzz on the Web just hours after the concert. Videos were already being uploaded on Youtube and people were posting photos on Facebook and their own blogs.
