ANGONO, RIZAL — Unlike other painters who embraced modern influences in Angono, Ember Crisostomo committed a lifetime of passion to traditional realism.
For Crisostomo, one of the self-taught artists of Angono, sticking to traditional realism gives him the opportunity to share how life used to be in Angono even before modernization. His canvass is his venue to show how he perceived the peaceful fields of yore and the traditional way of living in the area, something similar to what national artist Botong Francisco did.
“My paintings give the people of this generation a glance of the things they were not able to see and I feel that it’s a part of my mission as an artist,” said Crisostomo who started painting at a young age.
He said that instead of playing like normal kids would do, his past time was spent through painting, sculpting and carving. And these artistic activities were merely games for him at that time.
He then started to take painting seriously, metamorphosing from a weekend artist to a member of the Angono Ateliers Association. In 1989, he became the president of the association but became fully committed only in 1997 after retiring from his job.
“We have always wanted to have a center for artists here and I hope, now that I am old — we can accomplish putting one up,” he said.
Admittedly not selling as much as modernist painters do, he says that there are customers who would look for his paintings, and that alone makes him happy. His paintings range from P12, 000 to P45,000.
As part of his dedication to the arts, he gives free sessions to the young artists of Angono every weekend, since he himself doesn’t have a child to continue his legacy.
“I’m old but I’ll be forever young as an artist and I hope that more artists will come to embrace painting with passion because after all, pursuing what you really want can make you happy,” said Crisostomo, addressing his message to budding artists of Angono.
At present, you can see Crisostomo’s paintings at the AAA Studio in Angono.
