TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA — “Music and the arts instill discipline and bring out the different dimensions in a person.”
This is what Sandy Hontiveros, Executive Director of Ballet Philippines, believes to be the keys to a better appreciation of the arts.
Trained at a very young age, Hontiveros has learned well and enjoyed the benefits of cultivating her talents in the field of arts and music.
“I believe it instilled discipline in me. Secondly, it keeps you out of trouble, especially teenagers. Thirdly, you learn a craft that you can use forever in all aspects of your life.”
She furthered: “It has been proven that children who are trained in the arts and music grow up to be more fruitful and intelligent people.”
With this in mind, in 2009, Hontiveros along with the members of Ballet Philippines, Madrigal Singers, Tanghalang Pilipino, and the Manila Symphony Orchestra opened an art school aimed at encouraging people to engage in the arts. They named it Arts in Taguig City (ATC), situated amid the glitz and glamor of Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
Although relatively young, the school takes pride in providing the best education to its students from the leaders in the field. Members of the faculty come from the above-mentioned organizations. For instance, ballet is taught by members of Ballet Philippines and lessons in musical instruments are handled by professional musicians from the Manila Symphony Orchestra.
The school offers an array of courses in music, dance, theater and visual arts which are open to students of all ages.
“We are hoping to be able to follow this program from Nicaragua which they call El Sistema where the kids, at an early age, are taught musical instruments or singing instilled in their curriculum,” said Hontiveros.
This summer, ATC will also be offering courses in film and will possibly be partnering with Cinemalaya so they can hold screenings at the school.
True to its commitment of promoting arts in society, ATC also provides scholarships to deserving and talented youth from Taguig.
“We have a few scholars from Taguig for dance. We’re also bringing in scholars for theater and voice with the Madrigal singers. That is our commitment to the city of Taguig in exchange for supporting us in every way they can.”
Hontiveros enthused that as their clientele grows, they will continue to provide students with more kinds of training and workshops which will hone them to be the future leaders in the field of arts and music.
If only all Filipinos, especially the youth, will be given equal access to education and training in the arts, imagine how many more Lisa Macuja, Nicanor Abelardo and Juan Luna our country will produce?
Arts in Taguig City is located at 26th Street, FVR Park, Bonifacio Global City. It is open everyday of the week and may be contacted at (02) 889-3028 or (02) 275-7213. You can also email them at artsinthecity.info@gmail.com.
